viseu
The Cathedral of Viseu has always been the focal point of the city. This view, with the bright sky contrasting against the silhouette of the cathedral, has always captivated me.
Part of my exhibition “Luzes – Viseu at Night”, held in December 1990. This photograph of Avenida Dr. António José de Almeida captures the old train station building that once stood at the end of the street. Some years later, it was demolished to make way for the “Rotunda Cibernética,” marking the beginning of Avenida da Europa.
The old market of Viseu, now a space more focused on leisure. It also reflects a change in lifestyle and priorities, a shift from daily trade and routine to moments of relaxation and social life.
Part of my exhibition “Luzes – Viseu at Night”, held in December 1990. The Largo do Rossio, with its ever-present taxis and the old, nostalgic Café Aquário. A quiet snapshot of the city’s evening rhythm, when life moved at a slower pace.
Viseu, late 1990s. An open-air theatre performance at the Fontelo Park. The pyrotechnic effects and the contrast of the human figure against the background left me fascinated. It was one of those moments when light and movement come together perfectly for a brief instant.
Viseu, late 1980s. During our youth, school was one of the main centres of life. In a time without electronic devices, being present in these places truly mattered. In this image, the old arcade of the Alves Martins School (the “Liceu”) frames a magnificent tree that once stood in the courtyard.

Part of my exhibition “Luzes – Viseu at Night”, held in December 1990. Praça D. Duarte, near the Cathedral. The three street lamps aligned in the corner caught my attention, casting soft light over the stone wall and the elegant lines of the old building beside it. A small detail that shows how light shapes the city at night.
